4 Reasons Why I Colour and Why You Should Too!

To each and everyone of you who reads this post. Please know that I’m with you and I know you’re going through something because let’s just face it. Life is one hell of a roller coaster and if you’re not careful, you will fall off.

The past few weeks have been extremely challenging. A number of weeks ago, the unthinkable happened. I lost my magazine. Over 1700 quality reviews, interviews and images; vanished. JUST LIKE THAT.

I would be lying if I said that I didn’t feel tempted to throw in the towel. Many in my position would because as a result of losing my site, the revenue I had; after 8 years of grafting disappeared to. With that, some of my readership fell away too.

Let”s just say this year hasn’t been too kind to me and to be honest, I don’t know how or why I kept on going. But, I did and I do because I’m a winner and winners don’t quit and quitters don’t win. So I’ve been going through the painstaking job of uploading content again. This has been both mentally and physically draining and most of the time just impossible as I’ve been running on virtually no sleep and Sasha without her sleep is pretty darn useless.

So, as you can imagine. it’s been tough.

Nonetheless, as I mentioned before, I slump; like the average human being will from time to time. But somehow, someway I get back up and diversify. Basically I establish a coping mechanism to help me traverse around the barriers and stumbling blocks and work through my issues, one step at a time.

In this case, I revisited my love of colouring. However, did you know how much psychological benefits can be gained from colouring each day?  Mindfulness colouring has become much more than a passing craze of fad and more and more adults are reaching for their bright coloured pencils and coloring till their hearts content.

I have firsthand found out the immediate benefits of colouring and have established that it helps my mood, improves my overall attention span, lowers my stress and puts me in a relaxed state and calms me down when I’m at my most stressed.

  1. Colouring can help to replace negative thoughts

It is too easy to think a negative thought and just like that, before you know it, you’re consumed with one negative thought after another. In order to think positively, you need to be focused on what you say and make a conscious decision to change the way you think. Colouring helps you to focus on the image at hand. While you keep your eyes on the page to ensure you don’t go over the lines. You become quite transfixed on the image; ensuring it doesn’t become messy. By doing this, you find that you curb negative thinking and keep your attention on the item at hand which is increasingly beneficial when you’re battling with stress or overbearing thoughts.

      2. It is proven to lower stress and anxiety

Many therapists and health practitioners have recommended that their patients adopt the hobby of colouring to help relieve their stress and low moods. I have found that colouring does both these things and also helps me get in a meditative state. I am relaxed and subdued and tend to push aside any sad thoughts or negative thought patterns that may be getting me down.

 3. Improves ‘mindfulness’ and helps you focus on the here and now

How often have you sat and began overthinking about all the things that are upsetting you, dwelling on all the mistakes you made in the past and stressing about things that may happen in the future. We’ve all been there and it is extremely destructive to your overall growth.  Colouring brings your mind to the very moment that you’re in and helps you to centre your mind on the here and now.

4. It’s fun!

Yes, it’s quite nostalgic to sit and colour in. Most of us when we were kids were so easily entertained with colouring in that we didn’t need to pay for expensive gadgets or apple music! yes, we simply say and coloured for hours and let the world go by. Sometimes it’s good just to sit back, grab a pencil and colour till your hearts content.

Who knew some crayons and a colouring book could prove to be so impactful and beneficial. 🙂
