I have a confession. I have never once used a candle down to the very end. There’s always another one on the way, another scent I need to try, another brand that promised something my nose had to investigate. If you’re a candle person, you already understand. If you’re not this post might convert you.
Home fragrance is one of those things that doesn’t get talked about enough in the wider conversation about making a space feel good. We’ll spend hours choosing paint colours and cushions, but the thing that hits you the second you walk through the door; the scent gets treated like an afterthought. It shouldn’t be.
The right candle can shift the energy of a room instantly. It can make a tired flat feel like a boutique hotel, a stressful evening feel like a wind-down ritual, a Sunday morning feel like something worth being present for. I take it seriously. Possibly too seriously. Here are the home scents I come back to again and again and the ones I think are genuinely worth your money.
The candles that earn their place.
NEOM Organic: Perfect Night’s Sleep Scented Candle
English lavender, sweet basil and jasmine · Three-wick · From £20
Bedtime wind-down · Calming
NEOM is the candle I recommend to absolutely everyone who tells me they struggle to switch off in the evening. The Perfect Night’s Sleep range is built around a specific blend designed to calm the nervous system and whether it’s the lavender doing the actual work or just the ritual of lighting a beautiful candle and telling your brain the day is done, it works. I’ve been burning this one on and off for years and I still reach for it.
The three-wick version gives you a much stronger scent throw than the single wick worth the extra spend if you have a larger living room or bedroom. It also burns incredibly evenly, which if you’ve had candles that tunnel badly, you’ll know is not something to take for granted.

Paddywax: Library Collection Candle
Various scents including tobacco + vanilla, cedar + santal · From £18
Evenings · Moody · Sophisticated
If NEOM is my calming candle, Paddywax is my mood candle. The Library Collection comes in the most beautiful embossed glass vessels and the scents are deep, warm, and a little unexpected. I’ve had the tobacco and vanilla burning in my living room this winter and every single person who comes over asks what it is.
The scent throw on these is excellent for the price point nowhere near the cost of a Jo Malone, but genuinely in the same conversation in terms of how sophisticated the fragrance is. The packaging also looks stunning as a display piece even when the candle isn’t lit. If you’re looking for a gift that looks like you spent a lot more than you did, this is it.

This Works Deep Sleep Candle
Lavender, vetivert and wild camomile · From £30
Bedtime · Stress relief · Ritual
You’ll know This Works from the Deep Sleep Pillow Spray which I mentioned in the sleep post and the candle works on exactly the same principle. The same lavender, vetivert and wild camomile blend, but in a slow-burning candle that fills a room gently rather than hitting you all at once.
I burn this one in the bedroom for about twenty minutes before I get into bed as part of my wind-down. The ritual aspect genuinely matters lighting the candle is the signal to my nervous system that we’re done for the day. After a few weeks of doing this consistently, I started feeling sleepy earlier, which I’m crediting partly to this and partly to just having a routine that my brain could follow.
If you already use the pillow spray, this pairs with it beautifully. If you haven’t tried either start here. It’s the more affordable way into the This Works sleep range.

The White Company — Seychelles Candle
Coconut, frangipani and warm woods · From £22
Weekend mood · Summery · Uplifting
The White Company is one of those brands that manages to make everything feel a bit more considered, and their candle range is no exception. The Seychelles is the one I come back to most it’s warm and tropical without being sweet, which is a difficult balance to get right. It reminds me of being somewhere hot and unhurried, which in a London flat in January is genuinely medicinal.
The quality of the wax and the wick is excellent, the burn time is long and consistent, and the vessel is elegant enough that I display it even when it’s not lit. The White Company also does a beautiful reed diffuser in the same scent if you want something that works without the flame.

ESPA Restorative Collection Candle
Pink pepper, neroli and cedarwood · From £35
Treat yourself · Spa at home · Premium
ESPA sits at the premium end of my candle collection and I make no apologies for it. The Restorative candle has one of the most sophisticated scent profiles I’ve encountered; it’s bright and citrus-forward from the pink pepper and neroli, then settles into something warm and woody underneath. It smells expensive because it is, and it’s worth every penny of it.
I keep this one for the evenings when I’m running a bath or having what I’d call a proper self-care night, face mask, candle, no phone. It elevates the whole experience. If you’re looking for a treat-yourself buy or a genuinely impressive gift, this is the one I’d point you towards.

Beyond candles, the other home scents worth knowing about
Reed diffusers
For rooms you want constantly fragranced without having to remember to light something; entrance halls, bathrooms, home offices; a reed diffuser is the answer. My current favourites are the NEOM reed diffuser range via LookFantastic and the John Lewis own-brand options, which are well-priced and last well. Flip the reeds once a week for a fresher scent throw.
Room sprays
Room sprays are the instant refresh option when you don’t have time to light a candle but you want a room to smell intentional before guests arrive, or you just want to reset a space mid-week. The This Works Deep Sleep Pillow Spray doubles beautifully as a room spray, and NEOM’s Perfect Night’s Pillow Spray is in every bathroom I’ve ever admired. A quick spritz of something beautiful costs almost nothing and changes the feel of a room immediately.
Wax melts
If you’re someone who forgets to trim wicks or worries about open flames, wax melts are your people. A wax melt warmer with an electric element means you get all the fragrance of a candle with none of the fire risk. Useful if you have pets, small children, or simply a short attention span (no judgement). The scent options at this price point are extensive and some of the independent UK brands making wax melts are doing extraordinary things. Have a look on Amazon UK or Etsy for small-batch UK makers also check out my friend Kerry who also sells amazing Wax melts and other sweet smelling goodies HERE. I often find that the quality is often better than the high street at the same price.

How I actually use home fragrance: The logic behind it
I don’t just light candles at random. Over the years I’ve built up a loose system that means my home always smells intentional. Different spaces, different moods, different times of day.
The living room gets the mood candles Paddywax, The White Company in the evenings when I’m winding down or when I have people over. The bedroom gets the sleep scents exclusively: This Works or NEOM, nothing stimulating. The bathroom gets a reed diffuser that I never have to think about. The hallway gets a room spray; something citrus and fresh because the first impression of a home is its scent and I want it to be a good one.
It sounds like a lot but it becomes automatic quickly, and the difference it makes to how your home feels and how you feel in it is disproportionate to the effort involved.
Are you a candle collector or do you have one faithful that you stick to? Drop it in the comments; I’m always looking for the next one to add to the collection. And if you have a small independent candle brand you love, please tell me. I need to know.
