There are certain travel experiences that stay with you long after you’ve unpacked your suitcase. My recent trip to Morocco gifted me one of those moments; an experience that shifted not only how I view beauty, but how deeply I respect the process behind it.
During my time there, I had the opportunity to visit a traditional women’s cooperative where Argan oil is produced by hand. What I thought would be a simple cultural activity turned into a powerful lesson in patience, heritage, and the true meaning of natural beauty.

The Heart of Argan Oil: Women, Tradition and Legacy
Argan oil production in Morocco is more than just a beauty ritual; it’s a cultural cornerstone. For generations, Berber women have been at the centre of this process, preserving techniques that have been passed down through families for centuries.
These cooperatives are not just workplaces, they are spaces of empowerment. Women come together to produce oil, support their families, and maintain a tradition that has global demand but deeply local roots.
Watching these women work with such precision and pride was inspiring. There was no rush. No shortcuts. Just skill, patience, and purpose.
The Process: From Nut to Nourishment

Making argan oil is labour-intensive and I experienced this firsthand.
The process involves:
- Hand-cracking argan nuts (which is harder than it looks!)
- Extracting the kernels
- Grinding them into a thick paste using traditional stone tools
- Slowly pressing the paste to release the oil
It took time. It took energy. And honestly, it was exhausting.
But that’s what makes it so valuable.
This isn’t mass production. This is intentional creation.
Why Argan Oil Matters So Much to Moroccan Culture
Argan oil is often referred to as “liquid gold”and after this experience, I completely understand why.
In Morocco, it holds significance in multiple ways:
- Economic empowerment: It provides income and independence for women in rural communities
- Cultural identity: It represents heritage, tradition, and ancestral knowledge
- Daily living: Used in cooking, skincare, haircare, and wellness rituals
This isn’t just a product; it’s a way of life.

Beauty, Ageing and Choosing Natural
As a woman in my 40s, I’ve become far more conscious of what I put on my skin and hair.
Luxury no longer means complicated routines or endless products. It means:
- Simplicity
- Quality
- Ingredients I understand
And nothing embodies that more than natural oils.
Argan oil is rich in vitamin E, essential fatty acids, and antioxidants, making it incredibly nourishing for:
- Hydrating dry skin
- Strengthening hair
- Supporting a healthy, radiant glow
But beyond the benefits, it’s the story behind the oil that makes it even more powerful.
Bringing Morocco Home With Me
I didn’t just leave Morocco with bottles of oil.
I left with:
- A deeper appreciation for craftsmanship
- Respect for slow, intentional beauty
- Gratitude for the women who continue these traditions
Every time I use the oil now, it feels different. More meaningful. More connected.
Final Thoughts
In a world that constantly pushes fast beauty and quick results, experiences like this remind us to slow down.
To choose quality.
To honour tradition.
To invest in what’s real.
Because beauty isn’t just about how something works, it’s about where it comes from, who made it, and the story it carries.
And trust me… nothing compares to that.
