I have always been known by friends and family alike to have a great skin and I’m often found showing off my skin in my Instagram pics and previous modelling images. However, lately I have been battling with an overload of oil on my face. It has become quite uncontrollable and my usual methods of getting my skin to calm down just hasn’t been working.
Of course, I have not dwelled on this and have carried on as usual. However, it has forced me to re-evaluate what I eat, how many hours of sleep I get and what beauty products I now use on my face. A number of years ago, my go to beauty brand was the Tea Tree facial products by Superdrug. Pushing aside the affordability factor, this brand actually WORKED!
However, as I have moved into my 30’s the struggle has indeed become real and my skin is as oily as ever. Now of course there are known benefits to oily skin. The first and most vital being that oily skin is scientifically proven to age slower that normal and dry skin. However, to be honest; the benefits stop there.
The oil overload currently is at the worst it has been in a long time and with the extermination of one spot, 3 others appear. The worst part about them is that are the kind that form under the skin and appear more like a growth. They don’t rise to the surface and are extremely painful.
The worst areas at present are my chin area which I believe is hormonal and my cheeks. The entire area on both cheeks have an influx of painful spots that take ages to die and then when they do, they leave unsightly dark marks in their wake.
I have to admit, it’s a testing time with my skin all round at the moment as I have acne on my chest and upper back also. So the term ‘the struggle is real’ is currently very real for me!
Nonetheless, I am never one to shy away from a challenge; whatever shape it may appear in and I have been researching what foods I need to eat. I have also upped my water in take. To speed up the process I have also been experimenting with numerous face masks.
I’m in the early stages of my skincare transformation but I will be charting my progress on my blog.
The first mask I have been using is Proactiv’s Skin Purifying Mask. I turned to proactive after watching an advertisement on television and for a very long time, the product was working wonders on my skin and was seriously calming down the oiliness of my face. However, of late; it hasn’t been working as effectively. However, I have found that the skin purifying mask is a winner.
I understand there is a major thing going around the beauty world at the moment where natural products are reigning supreme, however, strangely many of the ‘natural, paraben and chemical free’ products I’ve used haven’t helped the overload of oil or helped lessen the number of spots on my face. Of course, I am trying new products regularly and am open to suggestions so if any of you have oily, spot prone skin and can recommend any natural or non-natural products that I should try, please let me know.
The benefits of the proactive skin purifying mask is that it isn’t heavily perfumed and has a subtle odour which is vital when you have a combination of oily and sensitive skin.
I also love the way that it doesn’t become to hard when applied to the face as a number of mud masks do this and have often left my face feeling very tight and uncomfortable.
You’re directed to leave on the face for 10 minutes and then rinse off. The down side of this masks is how difficult it is to actually wash it off. In the end, I had to result to using dampened cotton pads to remove the remainder of the masks residue off of my face.
Nonetheless, my skin felt completely refreshed after as well as there being a definite difference in how smooth my skin felt compared to before application.
For the best results, I find this mask works best when I first prep my skin by steaming my face for 2-3 minutes over a bowl of hot water. I then follow this up with a blast of cold water before wiping my face with tissue (I never ever use a towel and will write a blog post on my reasons why in an upcoming post.
I kept the mask on for 12 minutes and then proceeded to wash it off with warm water. This mask is the perfect choice to apply before going out as it automatically reduces the appearance of oil and makes the skin appear more matted.
The ingredients are not the best, but saying that they’re not the worst either as the first ingredient listed in water which is important and majorly beneficial for the skin.
I receive the proactive skin purifying mask as part of a bi-monthly subscription that gets delivered to my door. The combined skincare line has been a blessing to me and although I’m currently having flare ups; it still is a product I recommend highly and will be writing a more detailed post on in the near future.
It’s amazing how important your skin is and how miserable it can make you when it isn’t the way you had hoped. I never for a second believed that at the grand young age of 32, I would be battling with my skin and trying to find the right products to help restore balance. Nonetheless, I’m embracing the challenge and am positive that I will get my skin in a good place once again.
This mask is great if you want to apply something quickly and get immediate results. This mask will provide a temporary fix and leave your skin really unclogged and soothed.
I give it 3.5/5
