When Toothache Becomes a Whole Personality Trait: How I Survived Dental Hell (and What Actually Helped)

Sasha Shantel Brushing Her Teeth

Let me tell you something…
Toothache is not just pain.
It is disrespectful pain.

It’s the kind that creeps into your thoughts, steals your sleep, ruins your mood and makes you contemplate your entire existence at 3am while pressing a cold spoon to your face.

And for someone like me, dealing with severe toothache over a long period of time , while trying to access dental care through the NHS; was an experience in patience, persistence and self-advocacy. If you know, you KNOW.

Appointments weren’t easy to get.
Waiting lists felt endless.
And at times, it seemed like the only option left was the private route; which, in today’s cost of living climate, is not a light decision to make.

But in the middle of all the frustration…
I accidentally became a DIY toothache survival expert.

So if you’re currently reading this with half your face numb and your soul tired, this one’s for you.

Here’s what actually helped me cope with the pain while I was waiting for proper treatment:

The Toothache Survival Kit (No Particular Order, Just Real Results)

Clove Oil

This one shocked me the most.

Clove oil is known for its natural numbing and anti-bacterial properties and when applied gently (with a cotton bud) directly to the sore area, it can offer fast, temporary relief.

It doesn’t taste cute…
But it WORKS.

Warm Salt Water

Old school? Yes.
Effective? Also yes.

Rinsing with warm salt water helped reduce inflammation, draw out infection and soothe my gums when the pain felt unbearable. It also helped keep my mouth clean when brushing felt too intense.

Simple. Powerful. Underrated.

Orajel

Sometimes you need instant relief.

Orajel temporarily numbs the area and can take the edge off the pain when it’s flaring up. It’s not a solution, but it is a lifesaver during bad moments.

Corsodyl Mouthwash

This one became part of my daily routine.

Corsodyl helped with gum inflammation, infection control, and overall oral hygienem especially when I couldn’t brush as thoroughly as usual because of pain.

If your gums are involved, this stuff is elite.

Nurofen (Gold Packet)

No shame. No guilt. Just relief.

When the pain crossed into “I physically cannot cope today” territory, Nurofen became my backup. It reduced inflammation and made sleeping possible on nights when nothing else worked.

Used responsibly and only when needed; it helped me function again.

What Toothache Taught Me (That I Wasn’t Expecting)

It humbled me.
It slowed me down.
It forced me to listen to my body in a deeper way.

And weirdly… it reminded me how strong I actually am.

Pain teaches you patience.
Discomfort teaches you resilience.
And being unheard teaches you to speak louder.

If you’re currently dealing with this, I see you.
It’s exhausting.
It’s frustrating.
And sometimes it feels lonely.

But you’re not crazy.
You’re not weak.
And you’re allowed to complain about pain that interrupts your life.

Final Word From Your Girl

These remedies saved my sanity, but they are not substitutes for professional care.
Toothache is your body tapping you on the shoulder saying: “Something’s not right.”

If you can get checked, PLEASE do.
If you’re struggling through waiting list, I feel you.
If you’re budgeting just to smile again, I stand with you.

And in the meantime… soothe it, support it and take care of yourself with love , not judgment.

Because sometimes, survival looks like salt water and Nurofen.

And that’s okay too.

Lots of Love,

Sasha xoxo
